| Does anyone know what is the total number of students enrolled in DCC magnet and Up county magnet classes? What is the typical number of students in each program? |
| TPMS magnet has 125 per grade. Eastern has 100 per grade. Clemente and King each have 50 per grade. |
|
I was looking for a breakdown of students enrolled in programs at:
Clemente - MLK - Eastern - TPMS - Are these classes overcrowded? |
Why don't they expand it to 100 per grade at Clemente and King? This will provide opportunities for all eligible kids right? |
I think the number of seats there is proportional to the amount of students in their catchment vs. Takoma/Eastern's. |
These are one-grade numbers: Clemente 75 Eastern 112 MLK 75 Takoma 125 See pages 19-22 of: https://www.montgomeryschoolsmd.org/uploadedFiles/departments/schoolchoice/210818%20CES%20Secondary%20App%20Prog%20Admission%20Results.pdf |
Thank you. Are these students split into two classes or something or spread across general grade level classes? |
This report is very interesting. From 2019 to 2021, number of students placed has gone down while the student pool increased. Am I reading this right? Did they put two groups at disadvantage and promoted two other groups? |
The numbers are very curious. It doesn't make sense why the # of placed is going down so much. At Eastern the number of students "placed" in 2020 was 188 while in 2021 it was only 112. Anybody know what is going on? All of the schools show a drop. |
100 seats per grade plus an additional 25 from the local school |
I am guessing that "placed" in this context includes kids who declined. So, Eastern made 188 offers to fill 110 slots (or whatever) but then the number of acceptances went up in 2021. That makes some sense, since the 2020 class was finishing out a covid year. I have a child in that class (not at Eastern) and they had more than a handful of friends who had applied to private schools AND the magnet program. When it became clear that the 2020/21 year would be mostly virtual, those kids took the private school option. |
That was for 2021. Those students would now be seventh graders. |
You are reading it wrong. Even if kids did not accept the placement, why didn't they provide opportunities to other eligible students? Why do you want to deny kids an opportunity to excel? |
Will the 2022 report show even lower number in placed? |
In the old method, lots of kids go into both Takoma Park and Eastern. My incoming 8th grader was in that cohort - accepted in early 2020 for a fall 2020 start - and we saw a lot of the same kids at both accepted student nights. My understanding is that with the new lottery, which began for the class entering middle school in fall 2021, kids only received offers for one of the two magnet programs. So maybe that’s why there were fewer offers for the same number of slots? |
