How much does your elementary school student have to walk to the bus stop? The school says that anything up to 0.5miles is within the normal limits. I am wondering how many kids in the Little City actually have to walk that far. |
I’m guessing none. We had to walk about .4 miles in 2020-2021, but otherwise have gone less than 1 block |
Thank you for your response. We are assigned to a stop that is 3 blocks away and the school says that is in the realm of normal
For the city. |
did you look at the stops? Is there a closer one for you? I know sometimes kids on Welcome drive have to walk further b/c it is kind of a forgotten street- but I see at Mt. Daniel bus stop at Welcome and Waldorf. IS your child the only one in your block at Mt. Daniel? 3 blocks is really not that far depending on the length of the block- but I get the frustration. |
There isn't a stop closer to our house, The bus passes within a block from us on the way to the existing stop but the school would not open a new stop (not only for us but also for other kids). This is a new neighborhood for us and I have no appreciation of how many elementary school kids are around but it is a residential neighborhood, i would think there is plenty. |
FCCPS is usually pretty responsive. Give it a couple weeks- I know one year the bus driver on his own initiative moved the bus stop ![]() |
The school was responsive but not understanding and basically told me that parents want the bus to stop at every house , which is not the case. I was able to switch to another bus , same walking distance ,but at least in the direction where my younger child’s preschool is. I bit my lip to not say that the school would rather operate buses at below capacity then make reasonable accommodations. Will give it a try for few weeks and if it does not work, will switch to driving |
Received this from the schools about half an hour ago " We will do a 2-week evaluation of the routes without making any changes, and updates will be released on Monday, September 12."
One of the nice things (I've found) about this small district is that they can be responsive. Give it your best shot with an open mind, offer constructive feedback without coming off as entitled, and I bet you'll get a new stop next month. Good luck! |
We had about a 5 min walk one year and then it moved back to be in front of our house. My kid was 1st grade and it was Covid with social distancing. I would give it another week and ask towards the end of this week. |
