Elective switch in Middle School?

Anonymous
Just got my son’s schedule and he wasn’t placed in music even though the middle school advised they would make the switch for him over the summer. Are the schedules set or is there room for shuffling after school starts?

At my Kid’s MS there is a widespread scheduling snafu affecting many dozens of kids. I’m not
sure what the process is, but there had better be a way to fix it.

The schedules are not set, there is still time for shuffling.

Yes, its normal. Email the school counselor and cc the principal and vice principal. Our schedule every year is a hot mess.

My MS kid currently has 2 math periods. Extra math was not his elective of choice

Haha, oh gosh!! Not good. OP here and thank you to everyone for chiming in! So happy to hear that he will be able to make the switch and this is relatively normal. He is so excited to continue with the music program (our neighbors even gifted him a beautiful instrument that their own child used).

Just be aware that even though your kid can ask for the elective switch, there may be reasons why they can't get the class they want. My child was unable to take music in 6th grade because it conflicted with the only time avaialble for the HIGH (enriched social studies) class, and that was a higher priority. But I hope your child is able to switch to the class they want!

Seconding this to add that sometimes there are not enough students requesting a particular class, so it doesn't get put into the schedule.

My math hating child actually asked for extra math vs art. His reasoning was, he can get his grade up easier. Should really be an option IMHO
