what to wear to White House reception at 3 p.m.?!

Never been, obviously. It's to celebrate passage of a piece of legislation. It's in a couple weeks.

A suit.

This is actually pretty easy bc it’s so clearly business professional. So, that. Or something that looks like that.

Female or male?

Female- your most formal and stylish suit with pantyhose. Look at Nancy Pelosi for good style inspo. It's been 10 years since I was on a detail to the Capitol, but pantyhose was required then.

I'm guessing you are going to the reception for the IRA (which was technically already signed but without a ceremony). You do not need to wear pantyhose anymore. Wear a suit or a nice dress. Something you would feel appropriate wearing to an interview.

Here's the link to the CHIPs bill signing ceremony. A sea of business suits (on a blistering hot day!). https://www.cnbc.com/2022/08/09/biden-to-sign-chips-act-china-competition-bill.html

A word about formal skin-tone hose for the generation that may not know: it's meant to be invisible. The entire goal of hose is to smooth out skin imperfections in your legs so that they look really nice. The lower the denier, the more invisible and diaphanous the hose will be (and also liable to tear under your fingers). Take some care to match your skin tone.

These days, going without hose in very formal conditions (meeting or being in the same room as a monarch, head of state or religious leader) is acceptable if the temperature is unbearably hot. But when in doubt, err on the side of quasi-invisible hose.

Go to Nordstrom, Bloomingdales, etc. You get what you pay for. The more expensive the nicer they will be.

Are you a Republican? Democrats did not require panty hose on the Hill ten years ago.

Op, wear a business suit.

I’ve been to so many of these recently. CHIPS not a good example because mostly manufacturing executives. Wear a nice suit or suit dress or dress but make sure it’s a material you won’t expire in the heat. You have to be in the sun a good amount of time for a rose garden or other outdoor location in the WH bill signing.

Congrats and good luck!

You do not have to wear hose, OP. Wear a suit or a business appropriate knee-length dress and you'll be fine. There is no need to overthink this.

Yes, this. Make sure you know if you are inside or outside on the South Lawn or Rose Garden. They've been doing bill signings on the lawn. If it's outside, dress for the weather and don't wear heels that will sink into the grass. A shift dress or nice skirt and blouse is totally fine outside.
