DD would like to raise math SAT by 100 points - advice?

Anonymous
She is happy with her 680 verbal but would like to raise her 520 math to 620. She’s taking test again Nov 5.

Suggestions on how to achieve this? Thanks!

Just do test optional.
Your DS is lucky to have the option thanks to Covid

There are practice tests. I would recommend doing those.

Has she tried the Khan Academy SAT math? Or, if you have the money, private tutoring.

Analyze which questions she missed to see if there is a pattern. Maybe she just needs to review Alg II or geometry. Diagnose the problem and then fix the problem.

Try ACT instead. Some kids do better on it

Sit down and do practice test after practice test. Then go through everything you got wrong.

Do a couple of practice tests for math, work together to see what type of questions she misses (College Board gives this info), and use Khan Academy. If a student is motivated, they can make great progress with Khan.

If a student isn't motivated, then using tutoring is a better option.

Your DD sounds like she is motivated.

My kid improved by 80 point by reviewing/learning trig. Trig was rushed at the end of the school year.

Use ALEKs to review and fill in any holes in math knowledge.

Print out the math portion of the practice tests. Do as many of these as she can. For every missed question, look up the explanation on youtube (DD has been able to find help with every SAT question on youtube so far).

Nice. I don’t agree with posters saying just rote practice. Sure you could spend hours going over all math for the SAT, or you could work smart by figuring out where the weak spots are. Who’s got the time to burn hours studying things you already know?

+1

My kid is in a similar situation and this is the plan.

DCs first attempt was during trig/pre Calc and the second attempt was a year later. She said that completing trig definitely helped; between that and about 6-8 hours of prep the math score went up over 100 points.
