Any recommendations for how to start or find a play group for new moms? Ive heard of PACEmoms... anyone have any thoughts??? |
I used the playgroup forum here to post for starting a group when my DD was 4 months old and met some very nice women that way. |
looking for playgroups while still expecting? way too early!
|
I joined a pregnant moms group (which turned into a playgroup) and it was a wonderful resource - kept me sane during those early months! Found it through meetup.com - Mamistad. There are other groups on meetup as well as DCUM as well.
If you are in Arlington, you can join MONA and find/create a playgroup. |
I loved PACE. It was great experience -- really helpful in getting me out of the house on a schedule in the beginning (started when DC was 8 weeks) and I met some wonderful friends. Definitely worth the money, in my experience.
If you're interested, check out the website or call to see when the next group starts after your due date. I think you need to wait for your baby to be born in order to register officialy. |
where are you located? There are MOMS Clubs in different areas.
http://www.momsclub.org/join.html Also, taking a childbirth class is a great way to meet other moms who will have babies the same age as yours. I took a class in Chicago and had a weekly playdate with all of the moms for almost 2 years until we moved to MD. here's a list of local classes: http://www.birthoptionsalliance.org/childbirth_class_list.pdf meetup.com also has some local groups for around here. I don't think it's too early to start thinking about it -- having a good social network and support in the early days of motherhood can be really helpful and fun. And once baby is here and things get busy it can be harder to find the time to look. |
I don't get the love for MONA - as a WOTH mom, I didn't find them supportive at all ... all of the playgroups meet in the middle of the day during the week. I had better luck using the playgroup/meetup forum here. |
MONA is for North Arlington SAHMs. They're exclusive: they make that pretty clear on their website. But they give you suggestions for other groups to join if you're unfortunate enough not to fit their demographic. OP, I too formed my own playgroup from the DCUM forums when my son was 3 months old. Great group of ladies and kids! |
I am a member of MONA and it iis totally not exclusive. As long as you live in the geographic boundaries, anyone can join. There are currently over 1200 members and the reason they are only N. Arlington is because the group originally started as a MOMS club for N. Arlington. MOMS International felt they were getting too large. I think at the time that was 50 people so the founding members decided that they would leave MOMS and incorporate as there own group. This was about 7-8 years ago so you can see how it has grown.
MONA was started as a group for SAHM but there are MANY members who WOH, work p-t, f-t and we even have some stay at home dads. It is a non for profit group and is completely run by volunteer members with its current size is quite an undertaking. If you are in N. Arlington it is a great resource and if you are a working mom there are playgroups that meet on the weekends. MONA doesn't set the playgroups. If someone is interested in starting a playgroup they just contact the coordinator to get it started. |
MONA welcomes working moms now.
Not sure if the website info & application questions have changed (they did seem really seem to focus on SAHMs - which is why I didn't join right away), but there are many working moms. |
