Can openers

Anonymous
We have one of those newer (last 20 years) type can openers that open the lid from below, so there is no cutting. But when I take off the lid, there is always a bunch of glue hanging on for dear life as I pull up the lid. Is that really any better than just opening the can the old fashioned way? That glue can't be safe to eat. I hate even knowing it's there. I used to use these can openers a long time ago and never noticed the glue. I guess it's a new manufacturing process. Anyone else use these can openers and notice this?

Exactly. It's gross.

Could it be plastic? I know what you are talking about because I use the same kind of opener. I’m thinking it’s whatever substance they use to line the cans — plastic or similar.

From another forum:

“ It's not glue - it is a rubberized sealing compound that manintains the integrity of the hermetically seaed can. The sealer seams to be more obvious from a result of using our can opener rather than from the traditional top-punch opener. In fact, in most cases, it maintains the seal of the can even after our can opener has broken the seal of the steel. You can often see it pulling away from the can a you remove the lid.

It is not at all toxic, at least, they tell us that.”
