They have to be duel-certified so that’s not where the problem is.
However, current sped teachers feel ignored and disrespected. And who’s going to fill the newly open positions if someone switches to an open special ed position? |
Larger class sizes for general education students |
| No one is switching for $5k. It is a calling. Because there is no way in hell anyone would do the amount of paperwork required for a mere $5k (and much less after taxes). Not to mention the amount of bodily fluids involved |
Not every special ed job involves excessive bodily fluids. And elementary age general ed teachers deal with bodily fluids as well! |
If a general education teacher decides to switch this week, that would leave a class of general education students without a teacher. What happens with that class? |
|
That is the funniest thing I’ve heard! Thanks OP!
—gen ed elem teacher in mcps |
Like Aaron Burr? |
|
How many special ed classrooms are without teachers? I thought MCPS was 98% staffed?! |
| They should put SpEd (and STEM too, for that matter) on a different pay scale. |
MCPS tries to fill the opening. It is easier to fill a gen ed opening than it is to fill a special ed opening. I don't expect many dual certified teachers will take this offer, anyway. |
| What about current Spec Ed teachers? Do they get an extra $5K? |
Call it a retention bonus? They may have to if the current ones are angry enough to look around after this |
Normally, I’d consider it for an addition $15k a year, but after last year I realized that no amount of extra money is fair compensation for extra work duties and stress. I would consider it if all Special Ed secondary teachers only taught 3 classes and had the rest of the day for planning. |
