The coach at our school says kids on sports teams aren't allowed to wear their glasses on the field. Maybe there was some awful accident where a kid with glasses got hit... but on the other hand, kids who can't see are more prone to injury.
They can switch to contacts but that's a whole process that takes a few weeks. Is there an actual MCPS rule that forbids glasses on the soccer field? Or is this more of an individual school's preference? Is it written down anywhere so we can see if there's any kind of glasses that'd be OK? Thanks -- |
| No glasses at all? What about sports glasses? A totally ban on glasses seems like it would be an ADA violation. |
| The coach said something about buying special sports goggles as an option but that also takes 2-3 weeks or so to get an appointment, order the goggles and receive them, if they're like glasses, and I'm not sure where to find those. In the meantime, the kid can't see on the field. |

My kid isn't in MCPS, but he plays in sports goggles like this:
https://opticsoutfitter.com/collections/all/products/sport-shift-v2?variant=44215547691254 He can switch out a band for sports where they could fall off, and ear pieces. He wears them as his glasses for school because he likes them. I will say that my mom bought them, and she can go overboard on price. I probably would have gotten something similar from Zenni or Walmart or something if it was just me. |
| Wth, sports glasses are like $300. My kid can't wear contacts. Let them try and kick them off the team. This is such a dumb rule. |
You can get sports glasses way cheaper than that. If they can require other protective gear (cups, shin guards, helmets) they can require this. |
| OP here. Thanks, 20:08. I'll check those out. I wonder how long it takes to get them and don't know what he can do until then. |
This. |
Until then, squint! |
You're welcome. I think they came pretty fast, but I don't really remember. Zenni has sports goggles and they're pretty fast. |
| Can’t be a real rule - plenty of kids couldn’t afford sports goggles and insurance/Medicaid won’t help. MCPS wouldn’t make a rule that poor kids can’t play soccer if they need glasses. |
It’s been a few months since I ordered, but I believe you can pay a small amount extra to get expedited shipping from Zenni. My most recent pair beat their expected deadline and came from their facility in California. |
| Your kid is the water boy until you get him some glasses. |
I would love to watch this mom tell the coach her kid is allowed to do whatever she wants 😆 |
My kid wore sports goggles full time for several years. They were amazing for an active kid. Walmart had them for less than 100 all in. If your kid has a rx for glasses currently ( usually has to be less than a year old ) that’s all you need to order new glasss. Stop by a store with the kid pick them out, glasses usually are back in a week. No need for an appointment. It is standard for teams to require sports goggles instead of plastic or metal. So much safer. |
