Sources for moss

We have shady parts on the lawn. Grass will not grow and I hate all of the mud. Any sources for moss that you can plant down to make a moss carpet? Or spores you can spray in the area?

I'd just go out in the woods and dig up some moss and transplant it. That's what we do back in the mountains.

Illegal to harvest from public lands. Moss spreads slowly so you may need a lot.

Please come and scrape it off my neighbor’s roof. While you are there, pull the weeds out of their roof gutter.

Consider a native ground cover. This article discusses a number of them and has links to more articles. You may want to limit yourself to the less aggressive ground covers.
