Where to retire in MD?

Anonymous
We're looking to move my mom to MD for retirement so she can be closer to us. Budget for a house is around $400,000 and she wants a 3 bedroom/2 bath so family can visit. Looking for a very safe area where she can have a decent yard and within 2 hours of Hyattsville. Suggestions?

2 hours within hyattsville is a wide net!

Southern Anne Arundel County should work. My dad has a small 3 BR/2 BA place almost on the water near Deale that would sell for that much.

Why not an over 55 community?

Ryder wood? Leisure world?

We have a vacation house in Lusby near Solomon's Island. We live in DC. My husband loves it!!! He now wants to retire down there.

Annapolis area or La Plata.

I live in La Plata. That price point is going to be hard here. The prices here have just gone up and up.

I'd look in Anne Arundel, St. Mary's and maybe Calvert, but also look for something she can live in long term that's in a neighborhood. The over 55 communities would be a good idea.

Does she want to live rurally, closer to a city? How old is she? Does she drive and does she want to be around other retirees?

Does she need a house that's all one level?

Fellow La Plata resident here, hello! Yeah we had a run up in prices but it looks like they are going back down actually.

As close to where you are in Hyattsville as you can find.

Maryland is terrible for retirement.

+1. PA or West VA. Otherwise Eastern Shore - maybe Talbot County

Riderwood isn't really an over 55. It's a continual care environment. Its really for a much older crowd.
