My daughter’s preschool never had enough left handed scissors. Should I throw a pack of lefty scissors in with the school supplies that we bring to open house and share with the whole class or is that weird because of course they already have that covered? (DD is left handed.) |
This is for Arlington. |
Why are you asking on dcurbanamom. Just ask the school. |
Ask the preschool director? |
I think it's a great idea, but then again I'm left-handed. Righties, for the most part, don't care. |
This is OP. I’m asking whether I should donate scissors to the elementary school, not to the preschool! And it would be lovely to ask the elementary school teacher, wouldn’t it? But we don’t know who that person is. And even once they are assigned, I’m not going to bother them with this question in the first weeks of school. |
I think most will get lost in with the right handed scissors. |
Ohhhhhhh. I misunderstood. I suspect the PP is correct, they will eventually get tossed in with the rest of the scissors. If the kids have assigned desks/cubbies, you could send a pack for the classroom, but also ask if your daughter can keep a labeled pair with “her” stuff. |
As a lefty I think this would be kind to you, but call the office and ask the school that way the scissors will be used. |
Maybe wait until after things have settled a bit so the leftie is scissors don’t get mixed up right off the bat. |
I'd label them well, and maybe with a note that your DD is left handed.
Often the advice is to let kids find their own adaptations for being left handed in a right dominated world. So that may mean having her learn how to use right handed scissors, since during her life she won't always have access to leftie scissors. It does not mean forcing her to use her right hand for EVERYTHING, but teaching her that sometimes she may not have an option. Busy Toddler just had a really informative IG post about this. She's left handed, and she goes over when you should encourage adaptation and when you should accommodate. As a rightie, I found it interesting, since obviously the world is made for me haha. |
Ask the teacher at open house- this is the exact type of question that makes sense for that event! |
+1 lefty who uses my right hand to cut. I don't know if it's an adaptation or not because lefty scissors weren't a thing in my school and the nuns wouldn't let me use my left hand. |
Last year I labeled and sent a pair of left handed scissors for my DS to use in class. The teacher kept them at his table for him to use. This was for K and they did a lot of cutting and pasting. FWIW he was the only left handed kid in the class. |
Oh wow, really? There are 4 lefties in my daughter’s preschool class, which I know is a high percentage. But I assumed there would be a few in kindergarten. |
