My 14 year old Autistic son received homebound schooling last year and will start the year doing homebound. The director of special ed says this is not a long term solution and said the high school may not be the best placement for him. Basically, my son becomes panicked around kids who do not follow rules, use inappropriate language and have inappropriate conversations. This leads to terrible depression and anxiety. My question is, what placement does not have kids his age using bad language and having inappropriate conversations? I guess I am asking, am I wrong? Is there a magical private school in the DC area hat would be a better place for my son. An aside , he is academically on target or above .

| A small school that runs a tight ship might be appropriate or a small school that can support and work through his anxiety. Nora and Parkmont will both have kids who mildly misbehave, but they aren't as chaotic as a big public high school. |
| What IEP services have been utilized by the school to address this? What services were offered before going to most restrictive placement? Did you consult a lawyer or advocate about this? What are you doing at home to address it? Is this only a school issue? What incident occurred that was so disruptive that such extreme measures had to be used? What Alternative school placements have been offered? Was home bound school useful AND effective? Was proper education provided by a certified teacher? What did the school do to fulfill FERPA and LEA prior to this extreme measure? |
| I second checking out the Nora school. My child did not go there (mild ADHD and anxiety), but I was very impressed with them. |
| www.wrightslaw.com use the directory to find an advocate or lawyer in your area if you don’t already have one. |
Are you just throwing around terms you don't understand to sound smart? FERPA is the law that keeps student documents private. LEA stands for local education agency and refers to the entity (i.e. school district) that will implement the IEP. Neither is something to fulfill. |
It was a typo sorry LRE. |
| Is Auburn still around? |
Its website says their fairfax/chantilly campus has a high school, but I think it's pretty tiny. |
My kid went there and it worked but, by no means is it impressive. A few good teachers but, also a few not so good teachers. Sure bad teachers everywhere but, when you are spending that much money you want competent. Also, those kids don't follow the rules either. so I don't think Nora is a good place for op. |

I don’t think you’re going to find any program that has 0 misbehavior. Teens misbehave. Instead, you want to look for programs that can support your child as he learns to tolerate behaviors.
In MCPS, the E-SESES program would be ideal. Tiny Class sizes, quiet and calm students, separate entrance, advanced academics, etc… Where are you? Might there be a placement like this near you? |
| What system is this in? |
| I almost wonder if therapy to address the panic could be of some help. Eventually he will go to college and be surrounded by peers engaging in negative behaviors. Avoiding exposure does not seem like a good long term solution. |
Exactly. He needs well-designed accomodations to help him become more flexible and tolerate his peers. Have you hired a consultant OP? |
