Fun family outings/day trips near DC?

Anonymous
So we and our adolescent kids got kind of siloed during the pandemic, I guess in an effort to create personal space while always being home and rarely interacting outside the family. Anyway, I'm trying to get us to do more activities together and am looking for things to do that are easy, nearby, etc. Any suggestions of enjoyable hikes, outings, experiences near DC?

You can combo a hike at Calvert Cliffs with lunch or dinner on Solomon’s Island. My tweens love this particular day trip.

The nature center/museum is really nice there. Seeing the lighthouse where the keeper and family lived was a hit with mine.

Annapolis. There are a variety of historical and other things to do there. Just walking around is fun, too, for an hour or two.

Baltimore and Great Falls are great. Check with the park rangers before doing the billy goat trail. It’s probably fine for adolescents, but there are some challenging parts (at least for me - but I’m a wimpy chicken), so you should just make sure you know what to expect.

I'd definitely try whitewater rafting/canoeing/tubing (depending on how adventurous you and your kids are). There are a number of options within 1-2 hours of DC, along either the Shenandoah or Potomac. You can do it in a day trip or make a weekend of it and do some other activities (like visiting Luray Caverns or Harpers Ferry).

Great suggestion. My kids love this too. Lots of shark teeth at Calvert cliffs.

Go to some sports events throughout the year - Nats, Wizards, Caps, DC United.

And some shows at Kennedy Center, Wolf Trap, MGM, etc.

My adolescents sadly arent into hiking with the parents anymore.
