What do you pay for your color and cut (or other hair service) and what do you tip?

Does about $380-$400 sounds ridiculously expensive for two step color and cut? And then I suppose I would be expected to tip 20% on top of that so it would cost about $436. And that would be tipping the owner. Am I completely insane?! I will need touch up color every month so it wouldn’t be that expensive every time I go. But OMG!

It's why i started coloring and cutting my own hair. I have a great salary but that a out of money plus a three hour commitment is in-sane.

Agree! When I do my own hair, though, it never comes out as nice and usually looks pretty bad. I am a slave to the salon, unfortunately!

Wow that sounds like a lot! I have never had two step color so I don’t really know but it has been getting expensive for a cut. I pay like $110 before tip. I used to get partial hilights and I think those were another $100 so I was paying like $250 when I included tip. I only went every 4 months or so but it is a lot. I have stopped hilights and just do a cut like every 5 months or so now. I’d love to find a cheaper place. I was just wondering this morning if I should just give a hair cuttery or something a try but I went about 15 years ago and got an awful cut and they wouldn’t fix it for me after.

I get get demi permanent dye to roots every 6 weeks and a color color gloss to ends every 12 weeks. $90 for roots $120 for roots plus gloss. Then I give 20% tip. It’s done by owner, but they are a one person business. I don’t really know why I should have to tip in this situation- a self employed, one person business. Just charge what you want and say no tips. But I do bc I went to them before they went solo and feel it is expected now.

Do you tip the owner of the salon?

OP here. If I stick with one step color it will be much less expensive, but I feel that the highlights add dimension and make my hair look much more natural. Of course highlighted hair doesn’t look 100% natural, but I have to do what I can to almost get there.

Yes!

Is it only very old ladies who don't know this?

I'm not a stylist, before any of you come at me.

OP, $436 would only be a 10% tip. 20% would be around $480.

Pre Covid my hairstylist, who was the owner, did not accept tips. After Covid I noticed she added the option at check out. I had no problem tipping her then because she had to cut back on the number of clients in order to clean.

Ug..53 are just starting to see some greys. I currently get about 3 cuts a year. I DREAD this kind fo time commitment and expense. Maybe I will just go grey. I have very very dark hair so it will be hard.

It is expected now. Should I be- no! But if the cashier ringing you up for a black coffee expects a tip, everyone working in a salon does too.

Hair is very expensive in this area for some reason. I started going to Madison Reed for my roots. They’re fine, but I’m not too picky about my hair at this point. I paid $400 at one point and that’s just not sustainable for me!
