Country house?

Where would you look for a country house with a $1.5M budget? Primary residence is in Manhattan (UES), so we want something within east driving distance to NYC.

Litchfield county or the Catskills.

Westin, CT or Woodstock, NY? Country vibes but not too far from everything. I’ve also heard good things about Millbrook, NY. Not sure how far you can get in the Hamptons for $1.5M. Also, you’ll be dealing with a ton of traffic.

If you want to be on the water you could look at Stamford, CT.

No, Stamford is horrible. sorry. I grew up in nearby Greenwich and it is definitely not a place for a "country" house, its very urban.

What do you want from a country house, OP? Do you want to be in or near a village, or totally isolated? Do you prefer woods or water?

I live in Old Greenwich, but I think Stamford could work because there are nice areas on the water and you can’t get on the water in this area for $1.5M outside of Stamford. Also, it’s close to Greenwich, so if you don’t mind driving a bit it could work.

Hudson Valley. I was up there this summer and saw some listings in that price range.

Consider the CT coast from Guilford to Old Lyme. You can do very nicely with that budget here.
