Gum chewers in yoga??? WHY?

Anonymous
I regularly attend a yoga class that has for its focus blissing out and chilling. That's why I go to yoga. The class is held in a designated yoga studio where the atmosphere is very quiet. So you on the mat next to me, why are you popping your gum? Please explain. How much of a special snowflake am I if I bring it up? Would this bother you?

There should be no gun chewing.

Ewww. Poser wannabe yogi.
You cannot breathe properly while doing yoga and chewing gum.

That's awful. I honestly would expect the teacher to tell them no gum. Maybe you could say something to the teacher?

I have no problem with gum chewing, anywhere anytime.
I should add that I feel this way because I have a medical condition where one of the side effects is extremely dry mouth. Chewing gum helps me a great deal, it's necessary to get me through my day, including my workouts.

Bubble popping however...that I do not do, ever.

It’s fun to annoy people like you.

I would talk to the teacher. It could be they don't know or was avoiding the issue.

You’re a huge snowflake if you’re policing others behavior.

Your “yoga” is to learn to bliss out despite the gum popping. Life is full of annoyances. You have to find your own
Peace amid it.

I'm a yoga teacher. I would have a conversation with gum chewer after class.

If you can't "breathe properly" while chewing gum, then you don't know how to breathe in general. Gum isn't your problem.

Another yoga teacher here...

If I noticed during class, I'd have 'em spit it out.

If you mentioned it to me after class, I'd say something to the person at another time if they were again chewing gum; they could have just been oblivious gum-poppers. Most people are completely oblivious to the impact they have on those around them, even in a packed yoga class.

I was a yoga teacher. Gum was absolutely not allowed due to choking hazards. I’m not risking a death in my class (and possibly being sued).

This is sort of the problem with yoga, anyone can get certified over a weekend. But if you’ve spent any real time in other forms of movement - dance, martial arts, gymnastics, etc - you know how risky gum is, everyone knows someone who choked during a class.
