Hi, all,
My daughter (a summer time birthday - July) was invited by her classroom teacher to celebrate it with the rest of her classmates next week. I was wondering if you had some good easy birthday treat ideas that are easy to make and take since my daughter is in SAC (before and after school) so it will have to be mobile (nothing too fragile). Also, I don't know if she'll have access to the cafeteria walk-in cooler so I am holding off on refrigerated items (fruit/dairy cream filled cakes/cupcakes/ice cream/pudding) unless I hear differently from the teacher. There are 26 students in the class. I am trying to avoid cupcakes or cookies but it's not totally out of the picture. The only thing I came up with so far was either homemade rice krispies treats. Thoughts? Thanks. |
| Rice Krispie treats sound like a winner. Don't need refrigeration, easy to transport, and yummy! |

Completely OT, but tou're supposed to refrigerate cupcakes? I never do.
Are you anti-cupcake because they are unhealthy or because they'd fall apart? I make small whole grain muffins with pineapple and banana in them, and they are always a hit. Not overly fragile, either. |

Thanks for the answers so far...
I wasn't totally adverse to the cupcakes thing - it seems like that's what's done over and over again so maybe I'll entertain the muffin idea. If I brought in cupcakes they would probably be homemade (either from scratch/prepared icing or from a box mix/prepared frosting) since they're cheaper than the ones I've seen in the stores. Most (but not all) of the ones I've seen in the stores need refrigeration (Costco/Wegmans). The last time I went to Giant/Safeway the prepared cupcakes were in the fridge case but maybe that's changed. My daughter has SAC in a school gym and the temp wouldn't stay as cold as I'd like it to be (meaning the cakes/icing may turn to slop on a warm day)... |
| You can always dress up the rice krispies treats with mini m&ms or something like that. |

If you haven't done so already, you may want to check with your daughter's teacher about the rules for birthday treats. About two years ago, our ES introduced a rule that all treats had to be store bought and have the label on (an allergy issue, so very understandable).
As for what to send, I am always in the same boat as you with the before and aftercare. What I usually do is after I drop off my kids, I take the treats to school and leave them in the office so that my kids don't have to be responsible for them. (I don't think our before care staff would take the treats in, though I have never asked). I don't know what is the norm for you, but in our school, most people take juice and napkins along with whatever treat they bring. I've done donuts, cookies, brownie bites, and cupcakes. Usually my kids have an opinion about what they want or what they don't want. |
| How about a big box of fresh donut holes? They usually come in an easy container with a handle. |
