We just moved to Downtown Bethesda. I signed my kid up for a camp next week at Glen Echo, figuring he could take the bus there, but he is wondering if he can ride his bike. The route takes him on Goldsboro Rd. Is that a doable bike commute for a middle schooler?
Crazy week this week, so I probably won't be able to check it out till the weekend. |
| I would not allow that. It's very busy with people trying to get to Mass Ave. |
| Goldsboro Road is heavily traveled. I think he should be able to ride the Bethesda bike trail to Glen Echo. |
What is the Bethesda Bike Trail? If I looked on a map, where would I see this? If it isn't obvious, I have never been to Glen Echo, or on Goldsboro Road. |
| It’s not a good road to bike on, I would not allow it. In some parts, there is hardly any shoulder and the road curves and cars go really fast. |
|
Is there another route that would work?
I'm happy saying no. It's just hard to plan when you haven't seen the place. Is there some bike trail that goes to Glen Echo? Maybe one that intersects with the Capital Crescent Trail or the Trolley Trail? |
| I would not let him do that under any circumstance. I am on that road a lot and distracted drivers are always veering into the narrow shoulder. He could take the Capital Crescent Trail, get off near the intersection of Sangamore and Macarthur, cross at the light on Madaket and then ride on the Macarthur sidewalk. |
| Also if you just moved here and don’t know about traffic patterns you should check things out this weekend to see if you are comfortable sending a middle schooler out on a bike. Roads in this area are pretty dangerous for bikers because drivers are always on their phones. I have biked in cities all over Europe but never bike on the roads here. |
Thank you! Isn't there a dedicated bike path along Macarthur? It looks like there is on the map. That looks like maybe a 5.5 mile route, which is a nice distance. |
Are you op? Goldsboro road is very scary. I used to bike there but, I am a grown adult! No way would I let a kid |
Yes on MacArthur but not on Goldsboro to get to MacArthur. Honestly, pp why are you even commenting on something you don't know anything about? |
I'm the OP. It looks like the Capital Crescent Trail runs to MacArthur. Could he ride the CCT (which passes very close to us, and he can definitely get to safely) to MacArthur, and then the MacArthur trail to Glen Echo? Or is there some problem with this plan that I am missing? If we decide it's an option, we'll probably ride it together once, but if there's no way this plan makes sense, I'd rather DCUM just told me and save me a trip! |
