There’s a wonderful gifted school that’s near our home in Los Angeles. For acceptance my kids would need to be IQ tested (138 minimum) next year for kindergarten. How do I know if it’s even worth thinking about?
DS isn’t reading yet but knows alphabet and phonetics; his verbal abilities (vocabulary) are impressive; he can retell a story with a beginning, middle, and end; he is very strong when it comes to finding solutions and loves being read to. He’s average and not really interested in puzzles. No second language. Seems normal in most physical areas. I honestly don’t know if this school is even worth pursuing. His preschool teachers say he’s very bright but I assume they say that to all the parents. |
| 138 isn’t that high, OP. I would definitely go for it and have him tested and apply. He sounds bright. |
| So your child will test next year (2023) for acceptance into kindergarten in 2024? |
Yes. He has an October birthday. |
| Have him tested and then you will know. I do not think there is 1 indicatior at that age. My kiddo was a very early reader. She would read to her classmates in 3 year old preschool. We never had her IQ tested though so ??? She stayed ahead of the curve throughout regular public school. |
Yes, test to find out. |

At age 4, I memorized timetables. By 5 I could do long division and multiplication in my head. Skipped a grade. Never scored below 99 percentile on standardized tests in my life, and by third grade was testing at 8th grade math levels.
School was useless and just a place to hang out with my friends. If your child is like this, I suggest heavy investment in enrichment and tutoring at home. My parents didn't care and I ended up getting sucked into gaming by 6th grade and ended up just 'normal' smart by high school graduation. |
Don’t you think you would have been better off in a gifted school? |

The IQ testing at that age is fun. I wouldn’t hesitate to have my child tested.
|
| Isn't the obvious answer to get your kid IQ tested? |
The tests in Los Angeles are upwards of $500 paid by the parents. NP here and that’s not feasible for a lot of parents. I think OP just wants hints that it’s worth it. |
Jesus, I’m sorry to hear that. It’s just another reason why bright low income kids are kept down. Finland has it right - no private schools and everyone starts out equal. |
It is the 99.5 percentile. |
| A fascination and obsession with reading. |
Yes but not genius. The majority of people only have a 100 IQ. |
