Tutor for HS Spanish

Anonymous
We are looking for a Spanish tutor for our rising 9th grader. Can anyone recommend a good and experienced tutor (virtual) or a good way to look for a tutor? How much should we expect to pay? Our DC is academically strong across the board but last year struggled with Spanish. It was a non-stop stress for Spanish. We would love to mitigate this stress in 9th grade.

We use the mcps free virtual tutoring from tutor me.

Your HS Spanish teacher who teaches your kid will have a list of other HS Spanish teachers, from other MCPS schools who are available and willing to do this. You have to ask them.

Out of curiosity, what level of Spanish will he be moving into?

I say this as "been there, done that." My DS started in Span 3 for 9th grade. Got lost very quickly and had a low, low C after 2 assignments, even though he had As and Bs in Spanish 2 in 8th grade. We had a tutor, but even she said that Spanish 3 goes VERY quickly and "is hard."

Thank goodness, we could transfer into Spanish 2 in September before it went on his transcript. He had a much better understanding of the material before going into Spanish 3 in 10th grade. I think it would have been a true disaster, academically and stress-wise, otherwise.

I found a good one on wyzant for $50 an hour.

OP here, thank you all. all of your suggestions are super helpful.

To 17:41, thank you we did not know you can retake a class. this seams like a great option. DC is going into Spanish 3 in Blair HS. Multiple friends told us to brace for Spanish.

Over all, we are totally NOT looking forward to drama which is likely to take place in September - new environment, new schedule, bus issues, new teachers with different expectations ...

17:41 again. Yes, you can repeat a course even if you did well the first time. MCPS has changed how it goes on the transcript, but I think it's basically not there for 8th grade. (Someone will know the details better about retaking a course.)

Reach out to your DC's counselor. My DC fought me on this over the summer before 9th grade and wanted to try Spanish 3. I think all the friends were going into it. (One ended up repeating Span 3 in 10th grade.) I backed off until my DC got a couple of assignments back. Then DC understood "yeah, maybe redoing Span 2 is a better option." The verb tenses in Spanish 3 are complicated and confusing.

Ideally, you'd get it switched now because if you wait until after school starts, the rest of the schedule could be impacted (e.g., Science moves from 3rd period to 5th, etc.) We got lucky and there was Spanish 2 being offered in the same class period as his Spanish 3, so there was no impact on the rest of the schedule.

Oh no! You should have found an MCPS Spanish HS teacher during the summer and made sure that they were teaching Spanish 3 to your kid and filling in any content gap for Spanish 1 and 2 during the summer itself. Such a missed opportunity to bring your kid up to speed, get to know the tutor, be prepared for the new school nd have a ready support structure in place!

My 9th grade DD who signed up for Spanish 3 tried to go back to Spanish 1. Her counselor said she wasn’t allowed to since she had an A in Spanish 1. Is that true? Was he wrong or would she have to go back to Spanish 2 instead of 1?

There is no possibility of grade improvement from an A

So the only reason you can retake a course is grade improvement? What counselor said is true?

The final grade is irrelevant according to the policy. See section J.1.a in https://ww2.montgomeryschoolsmd.org/departments/policy/pdf/ikara.pdf

However, I can see a counselor refusing to place a student back into Spanish 1, after the student has completed Spanish 2.

Oh stop. You think parents can afford tutors for EVERY subject each summer to make sure their kids are ready? My son is a competitive swimmer who is really busy in the summer. He also took Health and did prep for Algebra II. Yes we would love to have a review of everything over the summer but it's not possible and you know it.
