We understood it would be compacted but this is ridiculous. The assignments are boatloads of endless busy work. I don't think the person running my son's class is even a teacher. He struggles to get the words out and fades out mid sentence only to come back on a different topic.
The quiz questions are not always clear and it just seems like someone designed it to torture these kids. There is certainly some useful information in there but it's not presented well at all. MCPS screwed up with this new requirement. I can't imagine what Health B will be like. |

It was a good opportunity to show my kids that not everything the teacher tells them is right. Whoever approved this curriculum and the way it should be presented needs to be fired.
Stop telling kids that being overweight is fine. Dont tell my kids to introduce themselves using their pronouns. This is a health class not a progressive "coddle the whiners" class. I cant wait to see what BS they come up with for Health 2. |
| Yes 1000 percent agree. My kid is taking Heath A now and I’m so glad it’s only 3 weeks. It’s a horrible class. |
| I agree it’s a ridiculous amount of busy work but how do you all know how they’re teaching and what quiz questions were asked? My DS was in his room with headphones on for the entire class. Do HS parents really hover that much? |
| It’s much better to take it in person. The in person teachers typically assign work that is completed in class. |
That sounds like a great claßs! |
| My kid took it in summer 2020 and the teachers who deliberately signed up to teach virtually did a $hit ton better job at it than what they had been getting in April and May 2020 from their teachers who were forced into it. |
I’ve had three teens take it in person. It was not much better than what OP describes. My children learned little and we’ve had to supplement at home to make sure they knew how to stay healthy and safe. As for the poster upset about pronouns. Asking students to share their preferred pronouns is pretty standard these days. If your DC is cis, saying his/her pronouns isn’t going to turn them trans. If your child is trans and you are in denial, using their assigned at birth pronouns won’t make them cis. |
| High school Health class has been a joke since I took it 30+ years ago. At least we got an optional first aid and CPR certification out of the deal. Otherwise, it was completely useless. |
+1 I have no clue when DD had tests. DD got an A. Yes, there was a lot of work. My older DC also took health in the summer and didn't have as much work. They must've added additional material, especially given that now health is a full one credit rather than half when my older DC took it. |
| I think we all agree it's a stupid class. I'm just glad my DD got it out of the way during the summer instead of wasting a class on it during the school year. |
But this was only the 1/2 credit course. Health B isn’t offered yet. |
| Health class was always a joke |
Eh. DS got through it and checked that box. It wasn’t hard. We’ve given up pointing out content errors in MCPS

I would bet 95% of the parents in this board would be happier if they included a section on CPR and First Aid and removed some of the nonsense. CPR should be a requirement for a health class. |
