Lunch is $3 for all grade levels?

Anonymous
I noticed this on the DCPS school lunch page. Is this $3/day and can only be paid via myschoolbucks?

It’s been a while.

Damn. I thought they'd managed to keep it free.

Sort of, there are 89 schools that are still offering free lunch to all students, including ours.

I really wish they had. I saw so many kids take advantage of it.

77% of schools still do. That’s not bad in terms of maintaining access to kids who need it.

But these are just all the T1 schools, which is how it used to be... This isn't the federal free lunch program we've had during COVID.

This. Why would you think you deserve free lunch if you don’t qualify?

Everyone has moved on from Covid. Pay the money or pack your kids lunch.

Even with the federal free program, the lunches were not very good or healthy so we packed DS lunch.

Even at non Title 1 schools you can still qualify for free or reduced lunch. So hopefully nobody who truly needs it will go without. But it was definitely helpful for families who didn’t qualify but still appreciated/needed the savings.

it would be nice if all dcps students were able to indefinitely get free lunch

Really because the money should go to much higher priority things like actually having soaps in the bathroom, mental health support, etc..not giving free lunches to families who can afford to pay for it or pack their own

Why do we have to choose between lunch for our kids and soap? You'd think in America we'd be rich enough to have both.

A kid who's hungry is a kid who isn't learning.

Some kids have parents who don't bother to fill out the forms or just don't care about getting their kids lunch. Kids with crappy parents need to eat too.

Massachusetts is doing it again this year. Not sure why DC is not. It destigmatizes free lunch when everyone gets it.

Oh come on. If the kid is not getting lunch because parents don’t fill out the form, which likely is a negligent number, the school will know and give the kid lunch.

No kid is sitting there not eating lunch when all the other kids are in the classroom.
