DD is in a magnet program w/ 3.9UW, 4.7W and lots of rigor. Great ECs, some regional awards (arts, engineering & science), clubs w/ leadership, various honor societies. Working on adding a few more awards and maybe research/publication. 34 ACT. Interested in Mechanical, Environmental or Civil. Would love a school where she could also do creative writing, art and theatre. (The last can be tricky because larger schools often have arts departments limited to majors).
I don't think a "weed out" program would be good for her. What are some programs that are more collaborative or at least non weed out or pitting kids against each other? She would love an LAC feel, but I know that's a challenge w/ engineering. Also likes the city. Not a partier and probably not interested in Greek life. Would prefer a program that is supportive for women. Primarily interested in NE or West Coast. Right now, she has on her radar (range of reach/target/safety): Smith Harvey Mudd Brown U Minn Wisc Cal Poly SLO Tufts UMD UMBC BU Cooper Union Hofstra Manhattan College Va Tech Pitt U Cincy Webb Inst Clarkson UC Irvine Lehigh WPI NEU Any advice on these (are some weed out? or do you love one of these?) or other recs welcome. |
| VA tech absolutely is heavily weed out freshman year. |
|
I kind of like Wisc on this list.
Brown would be lovely but its a lottery of super qualified kids to get in- low odds Cal Poly, Harvey Mudd, WPI, CU are all engineering schools, not sure they will have the art balance I think VA tech is doable for your stat kid. |
I say this because my DD's friend went this year and really struggled (and is in the honors program or whatever they call it). Barely made Cs in some of the core subjects. She is the one who told me it was weed out big time. |
| I know it's not in your preferred regional bucket, but Rice checks all of these boxes (except, ugh, location), especially with regard to collaboration and accessibility of arts/theater. |

Does she want to pursue a double major or minor in one of the arts you listed? If so, she should look at schools that do not have a core curriculum. The fewer requirements the more flexibility she'll have. I'd also forget any large public schools. She is going to want to have an advisor that is open and flexible. She'll find a lot more support at a smaller school.
If she just wants to participate in the arts as an extra curricular or club activity, that is a different story. |
OP here. Thanks for this info. Appreciate the perspective. |
Good point. |
Yeah, I think Rice would possibly be a great fit, but TX is a no for her. But, keep the ideas & feedback coming! |
| Doesn’t Columbia have engineering? |
On that note - What about Barnard? They are very supportive of women in STEM |
I think it's a 4-1 program. |
| Lehigh engineering can be soul crushing, but the school is otherwise an absolute blast |
It’s a total party school and OP said her daughter is not a partier so not sure Lehigh is a good fit. |
OP here. Good to know. I put that one for proximity over Bucknell and Lafayette because I thought it was tte least party school of the 3? Anywhere that people loved? |
