Would you quit if you have an unrealistic load of work and colleagues are bad mouthing you?

There is an inordinate amount of work and requires a lot of time due to the detail required to do the work. I’m doing lower level work because they haven’t hired someone else to do it. It’s unrealistic. I worked long hours, nights, weekends, holidays and I got a crappy review.

I don’t shirk my duties. I’m a workhorse.

Would you stay with your employer at risk of getting fired? Or give notice before finding another job? I have a child to support.

I would find another job and THEN give notice. It is so much easier to find a job when you have a job.

And yes, I would work only 40 hours a week at the current job while searching. Bc you can’t work 80 hours a week, job search, and raise a kid, or at least not well.

How long have you been waiting on a new hire? Have they even advertised it?

Yes, I’m exhausted after getting home and have a long commute.

I’m a manager and they hired someone senior to me but they haven’t taken on any of my work. They took two years to advertise and interview. They hired someone but the new person hasn’t shown up yet. I’m at maximum capacity and so is the person senior to me.

Op again. I’ve never been so tempted to quit so much before.

What type of work/industry?

I would find another job first.

Then quit.

Be careful, OP. After 40, ageism is real. Please do what you can to find a new job before you quit.

Nonprofit industry.

Look for a new job and in the meantime, cut back on the extra work you are doing. If you get multiple assignments that would exceed a 40 hour work week, respond that you are happy to complete that task, but you are currently working on X with a deadline of Y. And ask if your boss would like you to prioritize the new task and push out the timing for the original task. You need to create boundaries.

Thank you for this. I need to make a bigger effort to “cut back” to working only 40 hours after my miserable evaluation.

I feel conflicted in that there is so much work and that I will fall behind. At the same time, doing as much work as I have been doing, has resulted in low marks so screw it!

Agree with this but that won't stop colleagues from bad mouthing you. I would continue (following this advice) and look elsewhere.

Yeah, and I would add that it sounds like an environment where nothing you do will really get people to stop bad mouthing you (and I would guess there is a general culture of sniping and bad mouthing which comes from the top).
