Private & Independent Schools
| The Landon story completely swept the STA story out of the news. In part because it was a weak story anyway. But, now that the school board in New York State has decided to uphold the 20-day suspension for the Eagle Scout who self-disclosed his pocket knife that he kept in the car, I was just wondering what happened to the bumble-heads at STA who brought the bb gun to school in their car. |
| I hope nothing. That was a dumb move but an honest mistake that was had no ill intent. |
|
I heard there was some sort of school consequence but that it did not blow their college choices. I'm not sure on legal angle.
|
| Suspended and barred from campus for rest of school year. |
| Are you serious? |
| Yep. |
|
If that's true, then I take back my feelings about private schools not being subject to the insanity of zero tolerance. Jeez.
What DO you get for your private tuition dollars? Sure, DC residents buy their way out of the cesspool that is DCPS, but these schools attract kids from the suburbs too. A monkey can be taught to see what looks like a gun and hit the expel button. School administrators are highly educated, highly compensated people. Why do they get to suspend their judgment and act like a monkey? Or, why don't we recognized their level of functioning and pay them in bananas? |
Goodness, what a reaction. It was a serious situation that caused a lockdown, violated DC law, and put St. albans in the headlines in a badbway. Most importantly, it was a dangerous situation-- if police had reacted to what looked like a rifle with a sniper scope and shot them, what a tragedy. Lastly, you know nothing about their prior disciplinary status at the school (nor do I). What a strangely overwrought reaction against the school admin. |
| It was a stupid decision by the school. Im glad the kid's college choice wasn't affected by St. Albans over reaction. You can't blame the kid for the MPD's over reaction.... |
That was a fair decision. More than fair- they could have been expelled. |
| Suspended and barred from school grounds for the remainder of the year? I do not believe it. How does the PP who posted that information know that? My DS attends STA, and he says the boys in the Lower School have not been told whether and how the two BB gun perps were punished. |
| If a senior, as one of the boys is, is suspended for the rest of the school year, does he not graduate in June? Does he have to complete his STA-required credits later? Does he have to defer his college matriculation? |
| Does STA also have a zero tolerance policy about other illegal conduct, such as drugs and alcohol for minors? If they're suspending kids for that long for a bbgun in the trunk and not for these other infractions, then they are duplicitous. Forgetting to take your bbgun out of the trunk is not nearly as bad, in my view, as intentionally using illegal substances that can hurt you or others, if you are driving. Can any insiders comment on whether discipline is evenhanded? Prospective applicant would like to know! Thanks. |

My understanding (my DS is lower school) is that the boy(s) broke the law. That is a zero tolerance issue (ie it could have been alcohol or drugs or some other issue other than the DC gun laws). Being arrested and causing a lockdown is a serious offense, no matter what you believe about the right to bear arms, the DC gun laws etc. Rather than being expelled, the boys are barred from campus. They can finish their schooling but can not attend classes, games, dances, graduation --nothing. But they still graduate and it does not affect the college issue unlike those expelled for marijuana use earlier in the year.

| I don't think STA had any choice here. They broke the law. This was a gun. Who drives around the metropolitan area with a BB gun in their car? They were lucky they were not expelled. In fact, they were lucky there were not arrested! |
