Sunscreen: Reef Safe

Anonymous
I'm traveling to HI next month and am looking for a reef safe sunscreen. I've googled and found many lists, but when I cross compare them and read reviews it's really a mixed bag...mostly that some on the lists are not really reef safe, and/or they don't give you much sun protection - lots of sunburns which I want to obviously avoid.

Has anyone found a Reef Safe sunscreen they like? One that isn't a sticky paste, that is easy to apply, that also protects from the sun? Or am I asking for too much here?

TIA!

I don't mind the sun bum mineral spray, which is mentioned here: https://collectionsofwaikiki.com/reef-safe-sunscreen-hawaii/#Sun_Bum_Mineral_Line_SPF_3050

It's mineral, so I mean, it's not going to completely disappear, but it's easy to spread and it's not horribly white cast after a minute or so.

I like the ThinkBaby and ThinkSport. The clear mineral zinc doesn’t go on as smoothly as the regular ones. They seen it at target but in small bottles.

I’m in Hawaii now. There is a reef safe Banana Boat one that my husband picked up, so we are using that. We went through two other reef safe bottles, can’t remember the names. Hardly anyone here uses reef safe, which is very strange considering how emphasized it is on forms/FB groups.

Just returned from Hawaii a couple of weeks ago and we used Kokua, which is a local Hawaiian brand. If you want it ahead of time, you can order it on their site. Spent hours surfing and boogie boarding without any sunburn. It's on the thicker side so you do need to rub it in well, but at least I knew we were protected.

Just go to Walmart/target when you get there. We are on Kauai now and everything in the store is labeled reef safe. We bought a banana boat and a copper tone and both seem fine.
