Volleyball - Lacrosse - Year round basketball

Anonymous
Hello,
my rising 6th grader DD was playing basketball last year. However, her team basically only played from December till March.
The problem is that she started becoming a bit overweight, and we want her to play a sport that she likes, is year round, and helps burning calories
Other than basketball, she tried tennis, swimming and soccer, and she didn't enjoy these.
So after discussing with her, we have the 3 possible options, volleyball, lacrosse, or a team that plays intensively basketball year-round (and not just during wintertime).
Any suggestions for finding a team for one of those sports? We live in Fairfax near GMU.

Look into all the AAU basketball teams. Start immediately because tryouts are coming up. Ask the coaches if they have spots and how big their rosters are. She’ll get excellent experience and will get fit. Keep in mind that AAU basketball is competitive but each teams can accommodate different skills and often B and C teams.

Jesus - do you realize girls gain weight right before puberty, right? That the last bit of child weight and the extra as the hormones start to warm up turns into height, boobs, and hips.

My daughter was a kids sizes in 4th grade, a woman's size 10 and a few pluses in 6th grade and is now a size 6 going into 8th grade. She grew 5 inches in 13 months.

Do not force the same sport year round and body shame your kid

Can you help me with a link? I tried searching for AAU but these are the clubs that I get (the closest one that has girls basketball seems to be Annandale Lady Bulldogs)

You need to calm down. She didn’t say she wanted to force her kid in one sport. She asked for suggestions. She also didn’t say she body-shamed her kid. Stop projecting.

Has the OP stated that the daughter is playing above Rec level in 6th grade?? AAU or travel/Select is very competitive. You can’t just “make” a team. You try out. You need to be good at the sport, we’ll conditioned and competitive.

Your DD has to want to play AAU and be fierce. It isn’t just a sport you sign up for to “lose weight” as a tween. Wtaf!!

OP, lay off girls in middle school. Their bodies are going through a million changes and they do zig zag in weight. They lack confidence and socially it is very hard. Pushing non stop sports for your kid to lose weight? You can not be serious. Stick to a sport a season and give her some other outlets like art, yoga, writing, zumba, dog-walking jobs, etc... to decrease stress. Sounds like you are a mom that is going to destroy any confidence their kid has left.
