Two Questions House Price and Closets

Anonymous
Hi,

First question in an Alexandria neighborhood a house has been on the market almost two months with one price drop. It’s small. But, it seems to be in good shape and seems to have expansion possibilities but not for me in that price range. It’s $100K more than my budget. If I offered $100K less would they even consider it? What about $50K less?

Closet question about closets behind tiny doors. Is there a way to create a higher door by breaking through a sloped ceiling? The closet itself is tall and deep but I can’t see crawling in there everyday to get my clothes. What is an option, if any, to make the closet easier to access?

Thanks!

I doubt you can do anything to the joists, so look from in the attic space and see what it looks like. Probably you’d end up with a very narrow taller door. It would be very expensive and not help much, but it might be a fun quirky feature.

For your closet, you can have a non-square door, with a sloped top edge (the hinge must go on the long side). But the slope is almost certainly constrained by the rafters/roof above.

Thanks for your response. It doesn’t sound like it would be an easy or quick fix. I always fall in love with homes with no way fix. Oh well.

I think you are right. I wish the door could be made like a Dutch door. That would help with the head room. I have to stop falling in love with these homes with unrealistic closet space. Thanks for your response.
