How to get fish smell out of the house?

Anonymous
I cooked fish on Sunday, and my whole house still smells like fish, so much so that I'm ready to never cook fish again, except outside on the grill. Does anyone have any tips for getting this smell out? I have been leaving windows open and it helps a little but not enough. I don't like incense. What else can I try?

A realtor told me that leaving bowls of white vinegar around is her trick for getting rid of bad smells before open houses. I don't know how long you're supposed to do this though.

I simmer half a lemon on the stove. If you've got curtains in the kitchen, take them down and wash them.

But I've also stopped cooking fish because of this. It's all out on the grill.

I burn a scent called bukhoor. Do you ever burn incense on top of charcoal? I'm American, and I know many Americans don't, but it covers any smell.

OP - How much vinegar are you supposed to use? I only had a small container so put out 2 small cereal bowls with about 3/4 cup in each, and left them overnight. Didn't seem to do it. Do I need more in each bowl, or more bowls? This is helpful - thanks!

A drop of lemon oil in boiling water works like a charm.

First, wash the kitchen linens. A couple dishtowels can hold a lot of stink.

I like to take a spray bottle with a couple drops of essential oil (lavender, bergamot) in water, and spritz the curtains. Smells better than febreze, and works as well. I like the idea about putting the oil in boiling water. I'll try that.

But yeah, I never cook fish at home anymore. And I'm about to give up on bacon, though I love it so.

I do this - just a small bowl works for me. You might have a bigger space or something? Anyways when I have a stink I can't get rid of I put some apples (or oranges) on the stove with some water, cinnamon and cloves and put it on low for a few hours.
