barre classes with good music :-)

I am very out of shape and want to change that. In the past I have enjoyed workouts like barre, mat pilates and yoga, but mainly when the classes have lively pop-type music (which applies the least to yoga, of course), vs new-age or just instrumental music. Can anyone recommend live or streamed classes that use lively music? Our famiky has a subscription to peleton and I’d be happy to check out any in person classes/studios. Fwiw, I love the idea of Barre3 but seem to remember those classes only having new age/instrumental type music.

Hannah Corbin does barre classes on peloton with good playlists. I prefer her barre classes over ally love - ally is too obnoxious for me.

They are in the strength section.

PS, I was feeling very out of shape 6 mos ago and what has worked well for me was to start with 10-20 mins per day max alternating very short cardio and weight workouts. 5 days per week. I had health benefits just from this. My sleep improved and my blood sugar improved.

I increased gradually. 7 months later I am averaging 200+ “Zone” mins of cardio per week (measured by Fitbit. Peak cardio counts as 2x minutes so 200 zone mins does not equal 200 actual minutes, if that makes sense) I also weight train all muscle groups at least 1x per week, more if I have time. (I count barre as weight/strength training). this was my goal for personal health purposes and it took me a few months to get there but it has led me to feel stronger, healthier and more energetic! A big concern for me is heart disease prevention since it runs in my family.

So - good luck, start small to get a routine going, and trust that you will be doing more in time. I realized that because I started small, I wasn’t dreading my workouts and I wasn’t feeling tired and sore after, so I was able to get the endorphins and energy boost and build a positive association. This led to longer workouts over time!

Barre3 sometimes had good music, often not—I wish it were more consistent. They updated their video player a while back so you can mute their music and play your own. Only issue is sometimes the instructor will talk about the music (“catch the beat” or whatever).

I think the barre 3 music would fit what OP is asking for— it’s upbeat, not chill, and the instructors definitely use the music to motivate.

My biggest issue with it is that it’s basically muzak— they can’t/won’t pay for actual pop songs, so instead of, say, Crazy in Love, it will just be a song that sort of but not quite sounds like Crazy in Love. I find it kind of irritating! But I also wouldn’t want to pay more to get the real songs, so…

Sarah G's barre classes (Crunch Tenleytown, online, in person at other local places in upper NW DC) always have fun pop music from 90's-today that you would know. In fact, the style of barre she teaches (and which was developed in conjunction with the Sport & Health chain and Crunch) is meant to be choreagraphed to the beat of great music (I assume they have worked thru the necessary licensing issues). It's not background muzak/yoga type music. It's sing-along Beyonce, etc.

The music is key for me too. I have t found barre but there’s someone on YouTube called emkfit that does HIIT workouts to actual songs—she has themes like 80s pop, 90s dance, disney, Broadway, etc. and they are all very upbeat and fun. So far it’s the only workout that doesn’t make me want to blow my brains out.

If anyone has other suggestions for stuff I can do from my living room that uses actual fun music (thinking like Prince, michael Jackson, Green Day, Taylor swift, etc.), would love to hear it.
