| My Daughter is a rising 7th grader and wants to try field hockey. Are there any beginner Clinics this Summer or this coming Fall we can sign her up? |
| Where do you live? |
|
Check local public high schools and college/university teams. My DD attended a clinic/camp at W-L in Arlington last summer and had friends looking at George Mason’s clinic/camp.
I’m not sure whether to call these programs clinics or camps. They’re introductory programs designed for beginners that run a few days. |
|
Check Beyond Sticks and Nova Extreme, both good for beginners.
Also, your local rec leagues (SYA, CYA, FPYC, for northern VA). |
| Whats in the Falls CHurch area? |
Nova Xtreme is in the Falls Church area. That's where the camps and fall rec league occurred when we did it. |
We live near Tysons Corner. |
|
I second Beyond Sticks.
Also, there are field hockey rec leagues. Look at Arlington if Falls Church doesn't have one. |
| I HIGHLY recommend Beyond Sticks. My same age daughter had a great experience and really learned a lot. She’s now playing on a club team a year later. She hadn’t picked up a stick before. |
That's great to hear. For Beyond Sticks, did your daughter follow the year round program they advertise on their site (Development, Academy, Performance)?
|
She took took the Development class when it was offered in Chantilly. After that we tried a rec league and she said she’d already learned everything they were teaching in the rec league so we found a club team for her so she can continue to improve. My daughter is fairly athletic and runs fast but didn’t know a thing about field hockey before the Development class. We would have stayed with Beyond Sticks, but the classes/camps were too far from us. I do see now that they are offering something near us in Alexandria but she’s already on another team. She’s going into 8th grade this year and hopes to make her high school team in 9th grade. |
