Watching the michael Pollan documentary and we are in Seattle next week. We are 54 and 51 - newbies to this.
DH family has a history of schizophrenia so we have kept away from all drugs. So - should we try psilocybin? If so where in Seattle? Whats the downside? Any thing else we should think about as we consider this? |
| Can you talk to his doctor about it? Take very little to start.... |
|
The absolute most important words to remember:
SET & SETTING Seriously this is the most important thing regarding psychedelics. Have a sober “trip sitter” that has experience. They will help keep your experience safe and comfortable. |
|
You're being an idiot. If your DH hasn't had a schizophrenia presentation at 54, he is not going to have one.
So why are you messing with street drugs? If you really must, enroll in a controlled study via Johns Hopkins in Baltimore. |
| Boomers on boomers. Keep some xanny bars handy. Setting v important - shrooming when a boomer is a lot harder bc you have a lot more life responsibilities and stress and those things flicker in your mind. |
| Is it 1975? |
Do you know what a boomer is? |
| Uneducated people with no street smarts end up being victims. Stay off the streets, OP. |
Didn’t you hear everyone, including Pollan say that anyone with hx of schizophrenia probably isn’t a good candidate? These are included in the “all drugs”. In any case, I agree with set and setting, and maybe finding a professional guide. |
|
What's the documentary called?
But yes, be somewhere safe. Be with someone who has done it before. If you don't have that person, make sure you don't venture out of your "setting" or have people come into your "setting". It can really offset the vibe. |

I would not want a hired guide who is a stranger. I'd want a well known friend or relative who has experience.
A friend or relative with whom you have minimal baggage. You never know what little thing you'll persevorate on. And you'll do it for like 2 minutes but it might feel like an hour. |
I had read that it can TRIGGER schizophrenia so I am wondering wtf OP is thinking… |
NP. How to Change Your Mind (Netflix) There's been a lot of resurgence due to approved clinics (Pacific NW) of psilocybin and alternative medicine being government approved backed by studies, etc. It's a smart move and much like marijuana is starting in the "Wellness" space. There's documented benefits and reasons for the therapy but just going out there and dropping some to try? No. I wouldn't advise that. It really needs to be a guided control environment to address specific issues/needs/outcomes. It's not something to try on a whim. Some experiences are great, some are absolutely horrific, and some are life changing for good and bad reasons. Be careful. |
| I had heard that if you’re on SSRIs that they won’t work. Obviously something to look into independently-I’m not a doc, but have wondered myself. |
Yes - part of careful therapy is evaluating what you're already taking, why you're taking and why you want to try these medicines (and I do believe in the medicinal benefits). A lot of studies have come out with people wanting alternatives to traditional medicines and anti-depressants because of the known side effects of them and the never ending cycle of needing to increase dosing/change meds and the not life killing, but joy killing side effect of most pills. It's also been used for end-of-life therapies, and overcoming real trauma and has produced measurable beneficial results. It's worth diving into the research and if interested, going about it in a very methodical way to address your personal needs. |
