Elementary Summer program

How is it going for your child? The FCS thread made me curious.

My child is going into 5th grade and was really upset that I signed her up. And she was not quiet about it! She's not complaining too much anymore which I am taking as a positive, but also not thrilled. She likes the teacher a lot and enjoys both "mask" break and a read-aloud, but is saying that the actual math and reading are really boring.

What is everyone else hearing?

I think it would be hard to return to mandatory masking at this point. Do you expect them to in the Fall?

DS isn’t complaining which is huge. I think he secretly doesn’t mind it. The half days really help as does not having any homework or demands. The academics do seem low but that was what we were told when he registered. For our DS this was more about not having a summer slide and it seems effective for that.

The academics are low because the local school summer programs were supposed to be targeted to kids with the greatest academic needs, OP.

So how is this different from regular school program? Regular school programs are also targeted towards specific kids failing many kids with special needs and high performers

No, I don’t expect any precautions which is why we’ll stay virtual. Mine are fine wearing them but it does not do much if they are the only ones.

If you are worried about summer slide, try to get the free tutors.

I teach summer school for incoming 5th graders. My school has a 15 minute mask break. It’s the same as a shortened recess and allows the kids who do wear a mask to take it off for a bit.

It was targeted for any one at my school who wanted to attend. From what I understand, it is meant to be a review, not new information. I know the teacher who is teaching my DD's grade level and she is great. But the program coincided with a music/art program MCPS was offering and that seemed more fun for my child. And when my school sent out the bus schedule for those attending summer school, it had kids arriving after the day was to be starting. I knew I made the right decision not to attend.

We are talking about MCPS. That's great your school has masking but MCPS does not.
