Great news! Virginia announces an end to quarantine for asymptomatic, unvaccinated children in daycares, citing the strain it puts on working families and acknowledging that vaccines and therapeutics have changed the threat posed by the virus. I live in MoCo and live too far to commute to a daycare in VA, so this does me no good right now, but hopefully other states will follow soon. I don't think I've ever voted for a Republican before but I'll remember this with gratitude if Youngkin runs in '24.

This is huge!
Great job Virginia!!! |
We’re number one! In plague deaths!! What could possibly go wrong? |
Quarantines aren't required in Maryland/MoCo, either. |
You don’t have the stats to back that up. The science doesn’t support it. |
You’re free to stay in your basement. |
Could you please share with me the policy stating that so I can share it with my kid's daycare director? They keep saying the Office of Childcare is making them do the quarantines. I would love to show them the actual guidelines and fight them on this if that possibility exists. |
You could actually easily measure if daycares quarantines have any effect on severe disease and death, but no one has bothered to do that. I would bet a huge sum of money that the policies make zero difference if you control for adult vaccination rates in the community. Policies that are as costly and damaging as daycare quarantines can only be justified if they have a tremendous benefit. There is no evidence that there is any benefit. It's yet another massive public health policy failure. |
Really? My daycare doesn’t seem to have gotten the memo. |
Not even close. |
The Office of Child Care doesn’t set regulations. The state department of education main office and MDH do. Here’s the policy: https://www.marylandpublicschools.org/Documents/HP/MDH_MSDE_JointMemoSchoolChildcareGuidanceUpdate032022.pdf The only requirement is notifying the health department of cases. If there’s an outbreak (multiple cases) then the health department may direct a temporary closure of the room or other measures. There’s no requirement for quarantining close contacts. |
I hope this is implemented across all the schools ASAP-keeping my healthy child at home repeatedly simply because of exposure is a huge stressor. My job is fairly flexible but I can't imagine most workplaces are. |
Agreed. The quarantines are an enormous stressor. It's affecting my mental health and I take that out on my kids. I won't even mention how badly it's affecting my career. |
I'm in a very blue / COVID-cautious citie, and this policy ended months ago here, driven by local public health policy. Just FYI. Please consider the full impact of voting R, though agree that this was not a good policy once vaccines were rolled out in early 2021 |
DP The current posted guidelines for child care and K-12 schools in Maryland still call for quarantines of unvaccinated children. Of course, schools/providers can deviate from this. But this is the guidance. https://earlychildhood.marylandpublicschools.org/system/files/filedepot/3/covid_guidance_full_080420.pdf |
