Math at Westland

Here's my child's story:

DS came from a CES and had to test into Algebra 1 in the summer as a rising 6th grader. OK, we thought, that's fair. We are shown the test at the end. He got most of it correct. Content of test? Algebra 1 (not AIM). Conclusion? Not qualified to take Algebra 1. I thought that was a bit of an unfair set-up, in that a student should not be required to demonstrate proficiency in the class they want to take, prior to taking it, especially when at least 3/4 quarters of the questions are answered correctly.

As it happens, we spent a year abroad and DS could not attend that school anyway. However, we are now returning to Westland, and I was relieved to know that they accept DS's algebra class taken elsewhere. He will be in 7th grade taking Honors Geometry, and will be bussed to BCC in 8th grade with a cohort to take Algebra 2. In high school, he will take math classes beyond AP Calc BC, since a math class is required every year. DS has no issues with math whatsoever, so none of this is a burden.
