My child was invited to join his friend to their vacation home. This is new territory for us.
Should I send a gift? Spending money? We take kids on outings with us often but not on vacation. |
| Yes, spending money and gift. |
|
Yes, send your child with spending money. I would also look up where the beach house is and get a gift certificate to a really good restaurant in town.
Don't forget to send sunscreen, a hat and a beach towel with your child. |
| I take kids to the beach with us almost every weekend. Yes to spending money. Gift is a nice touch but not necessary. Things that are appreciated are certificates to restaurants, a family game, a bottle of wine. Things for the house like decorations, serving dishes etc are less appreciated. |
How about a puzzle or fruit basket? Dessert? Snacks? When we stay with friends as a family, we usually bring a few bottles of wine and fruit and/or desserts or pastries for breakfast. We also always pay for at least one meal out. The family is very wealthy so I don’t think they need anything from us. I just don’t want to gift something they won’t use. |

No gift. Send him with some spending money and have him mail a hand written thank you. Not a generic thanks- but describing his favorite thing about the trip, etc. make it personal.
|
| Op here. I just spoke to Dh and he thinks it will just be a burden for the family to take if we pack something. He said we will just bring their kid with us somewhere next. |
Puzzle: unless it rains, nobody's going to want to sit inside doing a puzzle Fruit basket: Harry & David or Zingerman's organic stuff. Not that Edible Arrangements crap loaded with preservatives. Wine: solid idea |
Agree. No one really wants or needs anything extra. They would assume you are just trying to check some imaginary etiquette box. Nice thank you note from son and reciprocate with their child. |
| Don’t bring shit |
You want a little kid to bring you wine
|
|
Give them a thank you gift when home. They won't have to bring home if not used on trip. Nice potted plant is good or alcohol if you know they drink.
Yes to spending money. Mention to parents kid has it. Suntan lotion, special snack to share with friend, towel, extra sunglasses & swimming goggles |
Yep puzzle, dessert, fruit basket are perfect. I think consumables and group activity gifts are perfect. |
|
PP here. Once a family sent an Amazon delivery of games. That was a favorite - surprise and something we all had fun playing.

I think a game that your family enjoys would be a nice touch. Wine would be weird (and I say that as someone who both enjoys getting wine as a gift (from adults) and also give wine regularly as a hosting gift).
Definitely send spending money. |
