I admit total ignorance to campaign finance laws, but I thought businesses couldn't donate to campaigns.

| In Virginia they definitely can |
So I think what it is is that it can't be deducted with taxes for the businesses but they can still give? |
| OK, thanks. All I see is federal election law and that says no, businesses can't donate. But maybe that doesn't apply to local offices. |
| You should look up the Citizens United Supreme Court case. Since 2010 corporations have been able to donate unlimited amounts to candidates. |
| Literally that’s Citizens United and the “citizens are people too” meme |
*businesses not citizens |
Yes and no. Companies can donate unlimited amounts but not to a candidate. Candidate funds are limited and only by individuals or PACs. The unlimited amounts go to campaigns for/against candidates or issues but the candidate cannot control those funds. It’s all controlled by third parties. |
