DD is a rising freshman at WL, and we are trying to figure out what sports she could do that would be likely to make the team? She doesn't do any travel sports; she did rec soccer and baseketball until 7th grade. Any sports take walk on beginners? |
Field hockey, most will be beginners or cross country if ahe doesn’t want a team sport |
Being completely Frank, she won’t make soccer or basketball unless she was good enough to be on travel but chose not to. Even in middle school the soccer and basketball girls teams are made of the kids from the top Arlington travel teams unfortunately. Track, dance, rifle team are options. If she’s an athlete she may be able to try a new sport like volleyball or field hockey. But know those tryouts start end of July/early August. It’s all on the website. |

Field hockey and volleyball are good because they have freshman teams. Cross country is no-cut and coed (your kid may not make the meet but they can still be on the team). Ultimate frisbee is another great one to try. It’s like football but with a frisbee and it’s easy to learn. |
Although it’s a spring sport, crew (rowing) might have a fall season open to beginners. But I’m not sure. Crew is traditionally the most popular no-cut varsity sport at the school, although ultimate frisbee is catching up in numbers. It is also one of the oldest sports at the school, going back to the 1940s and the program has a rich history of championship boats. |
If interested in field hockey at WL (my DD who just graduated played it there) reach out to school's athletic director as the team will have some unofficial practices called green days over the summer that your DD might want to attend to get a head start/check it out to see if she likes it. |
My information is a couple of years old, but crew was no cut at WL back then. And it's a great program. Good luck to your daughter! |
