Kids pinky toe -fracture?

Anonymous
My DD (6) just hit her toe on the bed edge with a cartwheel. The pinky toe looks visibly moved to me,at a slight angle. When I googled picture of broken pinky toe, I came across one that is an angulated fracture. Hers looks like that. Not as dramatic as some of the pictures but a bit. It sounds like these toes benefit from taping. Do we go to the ER? There’s no way we’re going to get into to see an orthopedic or podiatrist tomorrow, so I feel like ER is our only option. DH would prefer to see what happens overnight. I have broken and sprained my toes over the years on suitcases and dropping or tripping on weights but this looks different.

You could try an urgent care.

Buddy tape

Unless it’s at like a right angle, or you’ve got a compound fracture, you really don’t need to go to the ER. They are just going to buddy tape it to the next toe, and maybe give your kid a hard-soled Velcro shoe.

If the toe isn’t purple I’m betting it’s not even broken.

Not much you can do for a broken toe but tape it up for a few weeks until it heals

Ice it to keep initial swelling down, tape it to the toe next to it and try not to bed that area too much. Shoes with hard bottoms (Birkenstocks?), no flip flops or bare feet for a couple of weeks. Advil for the next few days

My kid has broken three toes. They do not just buddy tape it! They will give you an orthopedic shoe to wear for six weeks. You could buy one on Amazon but you should have them confirm it doesn’t need to be reset before it heals.

Most orthopedists and podiatrists will be able to give you a sane day appointment for a suspected fracture. Call around to find one who will see her.

Ouch! See a doc so you know how to properly care for it. I did that once when I was a little older than that (8 I think), and my foot is still messed up from not caring for it properly (ie just buddy taping it).

Walk in clinic - strap it. That's all you can do with a toe.

I was swindled into buying a $400 shoe for my broken pinkie toe and it didn't help at all lol. There's nothing you can do

The toe is black and blue. The toe is sitting at an angle and there's a gap between it and the adjacent toe, which is the part that's freaking me out. I think we'll try to go in (somewhere, don't know where) just to get proper advice.

It needs to be pushed back by a proper doctor. I had a broken finger they did that with - shoved it back into alignment and strapped for several weeks. Go to a hospital or a walk in medical clinic. It's not brain surgery he will be fine.

What did you end up doing, and what was prescribed?

I would get the toe looked at. I once broke my 2nd toe (the one next to the Big Toe), didn't have it set and it still bothers me to this day nearly 20 years later. For a kid who is still growing, I think it needs to be seen asap.

I would go to urgent care. The one near us has an x-ray machine and I have been in and out with a kid in less than 45 minutes, including exam and x-ray.

My 13 yo just cracked a bone in his toe.

A orthopedist will see you ASAP for a suspected broken bone. They gave him a boot to wear for 4 weeks. It can get worse if you just do nothing or just tape it.
