Wondering if others have moved to have distance from intrusive in-laws? Did it affect your quality of life?

I moved at 22 to escape my hypercontrolling mother. Spent my childhood being smothered, it continued in undergrad, which happened to be in the same city, and finally crossed the Atlantic for graduate school. Never looked back. She's much more normal when I visit her once a year on average for two weeks, than if she's been able to continually pop in and out and try to make my life resemble hers as much as possible.
The downside is that as she ages and declines, I'm not sure what her care will look like. I'm an only child, and she doesn't have friends. |
| Yes. We will probably move even further away soon. It greatly improved our quality of life. |

An in-law bashing thread! Something new and different!
Don't you ladies ever get tired of being angry? |
| My BIL and SIL moved away for this exact reason but the issues stood bc the actual issue was that my BIL doesn't understand boundaries and how to protect/shield his wife and how to not cater to his mother and consult her on all decisions. So to that point, it wouldn't matter if they were in the same city or 2,000 miles away. They are now divorced. |
|
How could you possibly know what difficult in-laws are like unless you lived through it? |
You sound nice. |
Nicer than all of you, that's for sure. AND I'm nice to my in laws too. |
Only couple I know that moved solely to get away from inlaws, divorced two years later. Inlaw were a legit problem but didn't deserve all the vitriol from the wife. Without them around wife realized she had a marriage problem more than an in-law one. |
Why are you on this thread if you don’t like it? Seems like a waste of energy. Take your negativity elsewhere. |
| Yes. They were seemingly nice but very needy, clingy and always wanted attention. They would show up unannounced, call at all times, disturb us. I made an ultimatum: either we all move away to get some privacy or I will move with the children. We moved away. I feel like DH matured a lot more. While we do live in a more expensive state now, it is worth it. |
Triggered in-law alert! |
| No, but the inlaws retired and moved within walking distance and started dropping by with little notice. This was hard and DH had to establish new boundaries that had not been necessary prior. Fortunately, they respected the boundaries after a bit of grousing but if they had not, it would have made a move tempting. |
