APS question about math placement for 6th grade

Anonymous
In the letter we got about math placement, the CoGAT scores for my kid were missing even though he took the test in 4th grade and we got the scores. Was this true for anyone else?
Anonymous
Yes I think they weren’t filled in but showing the benchmark of consideration.

Related question - the placement letter states the math SOL score, but that’s the first time I’ve seen the score. Is there somewhere I can see an explanation of the score? Should there be a document somewhere in parentvue addressing SOL scores?

They will send SOL scores in a few weeks. You’ll get the full report.

Anyone know how many kids get placed into pre-algebra for 6th graders?

My kid got placed in pre-algebra for 6th graders and very much wants to take the class. I am a little concerned about it being very intense. Is there a general feeling among parents whose kids were placed in that class that it was the right choice for them? Thanks!

If your kid has performed well in math up to this point and his teacher thinks the placement is appropriate, it probably won’t be too intense.

If your child was recommended for the class, I would have them try it. My oldest had no issues taking the class and continuing through the progression and is now a rising senior moving into multivariable calculus.

My middle child did pre-Alg in 7th, Alg 1 intensified in 8th, and they are rising 11th, just finished Alg 2 Int. For them it’s also been the right experience.

Pre-Alg is a middle school class and middle school classes don’t count toward your HS GPA. If your child struggles, they can move down this year or repeat pre-algebra next year so they have nothing to lose.

Soooo … any recommendations for appropriate summer review if my child will be taking the 6th grade pre algebra course?

I would review the basics and see if there are any weaknesses in working with fractions, decimals, long division, etc.

Do the 4th and 5th grade summer math packets. Try the 6th grade one and see what they might be able to figure out. If they can do all of it try the 7th grade one.

You can also buy books of SOL tests on Amazon. You can have your kid do those to refresh their memory and see if there are any gaps. For more challenge, subscribe to Beast Academy online.

NP - we're new to APS this year. Where do we find these summer math packets? Thanks.
