| We're buying a used PHEV OOS. The dealer collects taxes but said DC doesn't have taxes. Does anyone know how this works? I know we don't qualify for the Federal credit but we just want to make sure the dealer is telling us is correct. I assume I'll have to pay the taxes when I register. thx! |

DC previously waived taxes for EVs and PHEVs that were purchased. But they no longer waive taxes on the PHEVs, only the EVs can be registered tax free.
So yeah, you’ll need to pay when you go to register it in DC if the dealer does not collect and remit on your behalf.z |
Generally DC's excise taxes at registration are now based on MPG on weight. For example, you barely pay anything on even a regular hybrid Camry or Accord because they beat 40 mpg combined. The dealer may not know what they're doing, but whoever handles your tags and registration will (whether that's an automated system at the dealer or the DC DMV if you do registration through them). https://dmv.dc.gov/book/vehicle-fees/vehicle-title |
