Food of the 70s .. toaster meat pie?

Anonymous
I have a vivid memory from early childhood in the late 60s to early 70s of eating these meat pastries. They were frozen (I think) and were circle shaped and crimped around the edges (like today's Uncrustables).. Inside there was a savory meat filling; what kind of meat I cannot remember. Definitely not spicy at all. Very bland meat filling.. Not a pizza or sausage; no cheese or anything tomatoey. You cooked it in a regular pop up toaster, like a Pop Tart, not in a toaster oven..

This was in upstate New York.

Does anyone know what this pastry was?

I loved them as a kid and continue to love them.

Never mind. Just saw the pop up toaster part.

Maybe this was a regional thing.

I have no idea what product Op is referring to. But it sounds like a pasty. For a non-toaster, non-frozen version, check out the pure pasty company in Vienna. So good! https://www.purepasty.com/

Nope. But, as a young teen, I probably would have tried them. Lol

From Google, I’m guessing it was green giant snackwiches.

Hmmm...

I definitely didn't think so. But then I looked at this picture.

Maybe they were rectangular? I have such a vivid memory of the smell, and of the seams of the pastry.

But they didn't have cheese.

Yeah, I kinda remember these.

The closest you can get now are either toaster empanadas or microwave hot pockets. I don't know that they make that brand anymore.

I grew up in Pittsburgh, so it wasn't just a New York regional thing.

It sounds like a pasty to me, too. But we lived in upstate New York in the 70s and never had them there. We've only had pasties in the UK, UP, Wisconsin and lower Michigan. The UK pasties are different from the ones here in the states. Similar but different. My preference is for the US ones even though I had the UK ones first. I've always wanted to try the place in Vienna so your post is a good reminder to check it out!

It was nothing so fancy as a pasty. It was really a Pop Tart but with a meat filling.

The texture of the meat filling, if I recall correctly, was like liverwurst. It was very finely ground, anyhow. Like a meat paste.

It was kid food, nothing fancy.

I wonder if it was a Freihofer's product? They were big in upstate NY at that time and didn't they start in PA? But they just did bakery products; I don't think they would have been serving something with meat needing to be refrigerated or frozen.

Well I conferred with my mom and dad and siblings and no one remembers this thing but me so....

Grrrrr. I hate when that happens! Hopefully someone will wander in to this thread and tell you what it is!
