Waitlisted Situations

For parents who are still dealing with waitlisted situations for upper school admissions, what are your thoughts? What are you willing to do? This is preferably for the following schools: Landon, St. Albans, Sidwell, Georgetown Prep, and GDS.

If you call, you'll get the same tired message-- "things can still change". But the odds are shrinking. Most have no choice but to make alternate arrangements, and yet hold out for the possibility that this happens.

I think i've answered this before. We've gotten the message that change is unlikely at this point. But we would probably take a spot if offered as late as mid August.

So OP what are you going to do? You have posted this question more than once but never share what you are planning to do.

Isn't it kind of obvious that the answer is either public school or home school?

actually the OP's son may have been admitted to another private school but she is holding out hope for one of the 5 she lists. As we near the June 1 binding date it becomes an issue of money. Some people are willing to be on the hook for two tuitions to get their child at the school of their choice. Others aren't. So maybe that is what she is asking? Or maybe she wants to know if people plan to reapply for 10th grade? Her question isn't really clear.

I don't know that home schooling is that great an option for high school.

OP: It would be nice if you shared what you are thinking of doing, and where your son is in all of this. You have asked for other people's thoughts on many threads before, but have shared very little of your own thoughts.

As requested, our DC has been WL at the schools I listed above. He really wants a school like Prep or ST Albans, but we have already put a deposit down at Potomac.

Just relax then - it's not like you are without a good option. We didn't look at Potomac for HS but it seems like a really good school. Other than being co-ed is it really even that different from Prep and St Albans? All are pretty conservative traditional schools. All have strong sports. My advice is to move on and don't look back. The sooner you, and he, get enthusiastic about the choice you do have the better off you will be.

OP, what grade are you waitlisted for? I am thinking that your DS could re-apply later to STA or Prep.

OP: Is your son just continuing on at Potomac or is he entering there? I think applying again for 10th is good idea, as there are always some kids who move, or leave for boarding school. I know a couple of boys entering 9th at STA in the Fall and it was definitely a really tough year.

Not OP but I was told by the AD that StA only takes a couple of boarding students in 10th grade. Prep does seem to take more 10th graders.

PP: Do you mean that STA only takes students into 10th COMING from boarding schools, or students INTO their boarding program??
