what does dpo really mean?

Anonymous
I know it is days past ovulation. But do people count it as days from a LH surge? Or 1-2 days after the surge and then count the days? If one has a 10 day luteal phase does that mean 10 days after a LH surge?

LH surge is not the same as ovulation, so you cannot count dpo as days past surge. Temping is the only at home way to know when you ovulated (unless you feel ovulation) and you will only know 3 days later based on the changes in your temp. Generally speaking, ovulation occurs around 36 hours after LH surge, however some surges can last for 2 days. Sorry for the roundabout answer, but there is no easy and definitive way to tell exactly when you ovulate.

There is also a wide variation in different women in the the time between the LH surge and ovulation. I temped and used the pee on a stick ovulation tests. I figured out there is about 12 hours between a positive OPK and ovulation for me.

My temps have shown I ovulate same day as surge, but have also had a two day gap between surge and ovulation as well.
