Going to be a first year teacher.. I’m wondering what is a good affordable apartment complex?
Preferably in the Rockville/Bethesda area |
| What is your monthly income as a first-year teacher? Any savings? Any other big expenses like student loans? |
|
Parkside is old, but popular, convenient, and affordable.

$1625 for a one bedroom wouldn't be affordable for most 1st year teachers unless they have no loans to repay and/or have savings/family help. |
| You need a roommate. |
| Might want to post in the real estate forum. |
| You might qualify for the low income apartments in downtown Bethesda. Probably not though unless you have dependents. |
| Howard county is still hiring and you could afford to live near where you teach |
| Bethesda and affordable on a teacher’s salary aren’t really compatible. Depending on where you are working, I would suggest Silver spring or Germantown. |
+1. The Rollingwood apartments in Silver Spring are a quick drive to Bethesda. |
Possibly if you rent a studio. |

Look into MPDU's. Usually 10 - 20% of units are in the program.
That worked for me. If you have not been a full time employee anywhere you are likely under the income threshold. |
| I lived on Bradley Blvd. in older apartments on the border of Chevy Chase DC and Bethesda. They are surprisingly affordable, on the bus line, in between two metro stations (Friendship Heights and Bethesda), have parking, nice pool down the street, can walk to everything including gym and grocery. Also look into rent that is income contingent. |

| So parents, before you go bashing your child's teacher for whatever reason, you need to realize that your tax dollars of basically paying for many new teachers to qualify for subsidized housing. They have college degrees but they cannot afford to live in your county unless they are propped up by subsidies. |
