Negotiating not to relocate

Anonymous
I’m on final round of interviews. Initial recruiter call said “remote with travel.” Now it is mandatory relocation to an area that is not going to work for my family. Think Iowa….

I’m torn because the job and company sound perfect. But I can not move there. I have a spouse with a job that is 40% our income (no opportunities outside a metro area), aging parents and a SN kid.

Has anyone negotiated out of Relocation, but still got the job?

I get that “remote” is the buzzword du jour but bait and switch needs to stop.

I wouldn’t give up your current job that works geographically for this. Even if they agree they could change their minds in the future.

I also don’t like that they were misleading to begin with.

Agree the deception is unacceptable and reason to be wary.

That being said, I’ve lived in iowa, Nebraska, and minnesota and this forum can sometimes be ridiculous about dismissing these places. They have a ton of jobs, great schools, and affordable housing. Please don’t immediately discount them. We were actually able to move our aging parents with us because of the lower cost of living.

The bait and switch though would be enough for me to pull out of the process altogether.

A company that does a bait and switch like that is far from “perfect.”

It would be a bad idea to take this job. No matter what they say today they can change their mind tomorrow.

This. Walk away now while you still have a job. Even if you could negotiate so that they do offer remote work, they’ll pull it at some point, and you’ll be stuck.
