Georgia, better college town and doesn’t rely on online classes.

What’s better about Athens? Genuinely curious. They both have about the same size population, similar size universities, similarly ranked universities (guessing they draw a very similar type of student), very similar demographics, similar numbers in terms of HHI, poverty. I’m just wondering what sets Athens apart as a better college town?

I believe UF is much higher ranked.

Correct. So, again, what makes Athens a better college town?

It routinely shows up on the list of best college towns because of its charm, music scene (where REM got its start), and hug number of bars and restaurants. It’s also just an hour from Atlanta

Gainesville also has a big music scene where a lot of famous bands got their start, and a huge number of bars and restaurants and is not that far from several major cities: Tampa, Orlando, Jacksonville...I just am not convinced Athens is better.

Much better weather than Gainesville (swampy and humid) more to do, shops, restaurants, bars, close to Atlanta, more bars. Biggest pro is business school isn't online. Pro of Florida is it's cheaper. Everyone loves them both so it's hard choice.

Are you Jewish? Does DC want Greek? Where does DC see themselves more?

Regarding online business classes at UF, I wanted to repost what another poster posted (the original post I believe was written by an Florida college admissions counselor):
“AREN’T UF BUSINESS COURSES ALL ONLINE?!” This answer was shared here by a UF business professor in response— again, we want facts and not just conjecture, so straight from the source:
All the core business classes at UF are taught in the "electronic platform" format. This is not the same as online. There is one live session where the class is professionally recorded with a producer and then posted online for anyone to view that was not in live lecture.
Any student is able to pick whether they attend the live lecture or watch the lecture online. The student can make this decision on a daily basis, no need to sign up for a particular section. In my live class I have between 55-65 students attend. Since it is a "smaller" class, and not in a large lecture hall, the students that attend live lecture are able to ask questions that benefit the students watching online.
I can tell you from experience (when I started teaching at UF 14 years ago the course was taught in person in a large auditorium format) the electronic platform format is much more beneficial to students than the in-person auditorium format. Of course, only the core courses are taught in electronic platform. Once students get past the introductory courses and are taking courses for their particular major they are all in person.

Like what? Gainesville is bigger than Athens and UF is bigger than UGA so if anything one would think there’d be more to do in Gainesville.

This is no brainer. UVA. It has a strong Econ program which will give your kid a leg up for graduate school applications.

Signed Ph.D economist.

Davidson and W&M have a higher percentage of graduates that get PhDs in Economics than UVA based on government tracking data.

OOS for all. Law, social justice, poli sci orientation.

Money is a factor but doesn’t have to be the only factor.

We’re struggling with this so any insight is useful!

This isn’t even close. UNC.

Agreed. I went to UNC. I would send my kids to UNC in a heartbeat (but, no chance they would get in unless we move to NC). Great school in a great town. Full ride is amazing. Congrats!

+1 clearly Ph.D economist is not a good researcher.

W&M- sports and Greek is very low-key.

Both great but UF better recruiting

I'd personally pick Davidson. Fantastic school and far more personal attention that you'll ever get at UVA.
