Treatment for plugged ears

Anonymous
I had a bad cold 2 weeks ago and am feeling better but my ears are still very plugged. They don’t hurt so I don’t think it’s an infection, probably just built up fluid. I think the fact that they are so plugged is also making me feel a little dizzy/off kilter. I am not falling down or tripping at all, I just feel a little off.

Does anyone know how I can get my ears to unplug other than using Sudafed which A) has not helped and B) I have high blood pressure so it isn’t advised? Are there any decongestants that are safe for high BP and work?

You can try Flonase.

Sudafed is fine for short periods of time with high blood pressue - short meaning a few days or a few weeks. Did you take the full strength sudafed for 5-10 days?

Go to a Doctor and ask to see a specialist.

Just took my son to the pediatrician for this same issue. She recommended allergy meds - Zyrtec and Flonase.

I once had a cold that clogged up my ears for 10 days. It was rough so I"m very, very sorry. I hope you feel better soon.

Aside from steamy showers, I found that if I sprayed Afrin and then did the ear popping move (plug your nose, close your mouth and lightly blow), it would blow the Afrin into my ears and that helped clear the ears. And it might have been in my head, but I thought that Musinex also thinned out the mucous in the ears which helped.

Coricidin HBP Cold and Flu is what my DH takes when he has a head cold. Check with the pharmacist too.

Flonase and an oral decongestant is what my doctor recommended. Try tipping your head to each side (ear to shoulder) when you hold your nose and swallow. Sorry you are dealing with this! Clogged ears are the worst!

+1 for Flonase and something like Zyrtec. (My MD recommended.) You need to dry everything up.

Sudafed with the pseudoephedrine. I take it with every cold and when allergies are bad to get rid of fluid in my ears.

This may be obvious, but the allergy sprays recommended are to spray in your nose as directed, not your ears. I know, I know, it is probably obvious to everyone. . . but my neighbor.

My go to is Flonase and Mucinex. I also mix in use of a neti pot to help with the sinus pressure.

Afrin works better for me than Flonase
